15th Rd. Supercross 2016 – Foxborough, MA (USA)
|Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Ryan Dungey earned his 31st consecutive podium finish on Saturday with a 3rd place at Round 15 of the AMA 450SX Championship in Foxborough, Massachusetts.|
With rainfall throughout the night and into the morning, the track was uncharacteristically muddy for the timed qualifying sessions. Ryan Dungey prevailed through the unfavorable track conditions to earn the fastest time in qualifying aboard his KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION, while his teammate Marvin Musquin qualified in 12th.
In 450SX Heat 1, Musquin captured the holeshot and ultimately finished 4th to transfer into the Main Event. In 450SX Heat 2, Dungey shot out to grab the holeshot but the race was Red Flagged due to riders hitting the starting gate. In the restart, it was Dungey who once again captured the holeshot and the early lead. After battling back-and-forth for the first few laps, Ken Roczen took over the lead and maintained it to the end, with Dungey in 2nd and BTOSports.com KTM’s Justin Brayton in 3rd.
Dungey briefly dropped into the 4th place position before making a big charge to overtake the 3rd place position with a strong pass on Jason Anderson through the whoops. From there, Dungey pushed toward Tomac in 2nd but wasn’t able to catch him before the checkers flew.
“I struggled a little bit tonight but that’s racing,” Dungey said. “We knew it was a possibility to wrap up the championship tonight but it wasn’t the main goal – it would have been a bonus. We’re going to come back next weekend and give the fans a good show.”
Dungey now holds a 43-point lead over Roczen with two rounds remaining in the 450SX Championship.
Musquin ultimately finished 10th in the Main Event, where he now sits in 6th place in the Championship Standings.
Troy Lee Designs Red Bull KTM’s Shane McElrath finishes a close fourth place in Foxborough
After an off-season injury left him questionable to race at all, McElrath has shown flashes of incredible speed on his KTM 250 SX-F FACTORY EDITION as he’s continued to work his way into race shape. In Foxborough, he was battling with the leaders and despite some small mistakes, stayed with the front pack until the end, where he finished just off the podium in fourth.
“I didn’t have many expectations when I came into the season because of the injury,” said McElrath. “I always want to be battling for the win, but wasn’t sure where I was going to fit in at the start of the season. So I’m really happy that I’m up there going after the win and podium spots.”
Alex Frye started the night with a solid heat race where he finished fourth. He got a solid start in the main event, but had to overcome some misfortune, eventually claiming 19th.
The Eastern Regional riders will stay in the Northeast for another week as the team heads to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on April 30.
